Douglas John Douglas I like your enthusiasm. But there must be a better example than toll roads. Please tell me you are not oblivious to the fact that public services like highways are very expensive and must be paid for somehow. Or should the builders just donate their time and trouble to the common good?

Freeways were never free. Almost all public highways in the United States were toll roads from the start, once they constituted major investments of capital for engineering, construction, and maintenance.
And it was Germany in the 30's that launched and pushed the idea of huge transportation links to aid commerce and back up airports during conflict. The Fascists were so good at stuff like that. Oh, and mass media, too. Pioneers, those bright Germans!
